Destination wedding activities can transform your celebration into an unforgettable experience, creating lasting memories and bringing your loved ones together in a unique way.
For many destination weddings, guests have traveled far to join in the festivities. While the all-inclusive offerings—beach days, swim-up bars, pools, and wedding events—are enjoyable, adding an extra activity can make the experience even more special.
I’ve found that activities that combine fun, culture, and opportunities to bond are always a hit. One of my favorite recommendations for couples planning destination wedding events is a catamaran excursion.
Time and time again, couples tell me this was one of the highlights of their wedding trip! If you’re considering adding a catamaran cruise to your itinerary, here are some tips and ideas to make it seamless and enjoyable.
When to Host the Catamaran Cruise
Deciding on the timing of your catamaran cruise is key. Most couples opt for one of two options: the day before or the day after the wedding.
- The Day Before the Wedding: If you choose this option, plan for an early morning departure (around 8–9 a.m.) so everyone has time to return, relax, and prepare for a rehearsal dinner or evening plans.
- The Day After the Wedding: For post-wedding cruises, a later start in the afternoon (around 2 p.m.) works well, giving guests time to sleep in and recover from the celebration.
Both options have their benefits, so choose the one that fits best with your overall schedule and guest dynamics.
Decide How Many Guests to Invite
Consider the size of your group when planning the cruise. You don’t have to invite everyone, especially if your wedding includes 100+ guests. Catamarans often come with private transportation to and from the marina, which adds to the convenience.
To make the experience truly special, I recommend booking a private charter just for your group. Catamarans can typically accommodate groups ranging from 10 to 70 people, but I’ve found the ideal number to be around 30–40. Some couples include only their bridal party, closest family, or friends, while smaller weddings might extend the invitation to all guests.
Choose Your Route
Catamaran cruises often offer different route options, so decide what kind of experience you’d like to provide:
- Destination Cruise: Head to a specific spot like Isla Mujeres or another nearby island.
- Party Boat Style: A four-hour cruise is the perfect length of time in my opinion, with stops for snorkeling, swimming, sandbars, or simply relaxing onboard. These cruises usually include food, drinks, and music for a lively, celebratory vibe.
Pro Tip: Check for Complimentary Activities
Some resorts or wedding packages include free activities, like a catamaran cruise. For instance, one of my couples at Sandals Royal Bahamian earned a free excursion and invited all their guests the day after the wedding. It turned out to be a huge hit! As a dedicated destination wedding planner I can help check with your resort to see if similar options are available.
Communicate With Your Guests in Advance So They Can Prepare
Let guests know about the catamaran plans at least a month in advance so they can prepare. Not everyone is comfortable on a boat, and some may have concerns about seasickness. I would suggest they test out seasickness medications like Bonine or Dramamine beforehand if needed.
It would also be helpful to provide guests with a packing list of essentials like sunscreen, hats, and swimsuits. For those who might face challenges with water activities early notice allows them to make necessary preparations. (ie. for issues with water in the ears – I find these earplugs to be amazing)
